MAY 11th SUMMING UP
  • An edition of the race with less depth than usual. The lack of a strong runner from M Johnston, D Barron and from a bigger southern stable leaves a lower quality race.
  • None of the previous runners has strong and proven form and most step up to 6f after failing to be competitive in 5f races. Mae Cigan and Mormeatmic both have achieved places with low ratings at 5f and should show some improvement for 6f. But neither set a strong level that an improver or a newcomer could not better.
  • King's Revenge runs for a trainer who has used the race for disappointing 2yos in the last three years and there is a fair chance that he's here to continue that record. He made a quiet debut from stall 1 at Beverley over 5f and was not put into that race. This race will tell us whether he is moderate or has the ability to rate in the 60s. A longer SP would be a pretty sure sign that he can be ignored.
  • Therefore, in a race which looks moderate a competent debut from a better type would be enough to win. Castellano may well only be of 'average winner' quality on profile but his trainer has slightly changed his style in the last two years and the British FTO 2yos now tend to be able to win moderate races.
  • RACE QUALITY:
  • The race has relied on runner from a small list of trainers to add some average+ winners to the general low quality of the race - northern trainers M Johnston & D Barron along with southern based M Channon, R Charlton & M Quinlan.
  • Of these only M Johnston (with a probable moderate 2yo) & M Quinlan (Castellano) have runners.
  • In previous seasons it has developed into 'two races' with the better types fighting out the finish with mostly moderates types behind. The race has needed a 74+ performance to win in the last three seasons.
  • TRAINERS:
  • TD Easterby has run five 2yos in this race in the last three years. They have all started at 14/1 or longer and have been disappointing types and none have won. He runs King's Revenge here who made a quiet debut at 20/1 from a bad draw at Beverley.
  • SIRES:
  • First season sires Bertolini (Taras Leader) & Arkadian Hero (Sanders Boy) have their first 6f runners.
  • SALES REVIEWS:
  • Castellano rated 72.
  • King's Revenge rated 69.
  • Shaydreambeliever rated 67.
  • Fitzsimons, Flying Doctor, Knife Artist were all rated 62 with similar chance of being competitive 2yos at their level.
  • Supreme Charter rated 61.
