An unusual day with 6 of the 7 races maidens or auctions and more than
40 newcomers overall spread across the meetings. Leaving aside well related
owner bred horses as many as 7 of the FTO runners cost more than 100,000
guineas and another 7 between 50,000 to 100,000 and all well above average
sales prices.
-
The two most expensive purchases are Miss Tango Hotel who cost 200,000
as a yearling and Patrician's Glory who runs for Jane Chapple-Hyam in the
second division of the 7f maiden at Newbury. Another FTO P&L qualifier
in Spinners End is the third most expensive at 160,000.
-
This was a lost day last year with the torrential rain washing out the
Nebwury meeting and the following day's Super Sprint. For reference here
are the 2006 results for the two maidens at Newbury (only one 7f race that
year) and the one at Newmarket :-
-
Newbury 6f Maiden Fillies' - Result
- 7 later winners in the field of 15 with the first two going on to Listed
race wins and the fourth Listed placed. The later winners at maiden level
are mostly in the front half of the field with the exception trained by
Bryan Meehan who is known for educational debuts except at certain points
in the year.
-
Newbury 7f Maiden - Result
- only 4 later winners from the field of 18 and nothing better than maiden
race level. The front of the field is packed with owner bred runners for
the normal group including Hamdan, Khalid Abdulla and Cheveley Park. The
only later winner behind midfield was a 100/1 shot for Meehan again who
won a nursery. The lesson is that big fields, the right owners and expensive
kit can produce widely different groups of horses in the same race each
year.
-
Newmarket 7f Maiden fillies' - Result
- the type of 7f debut from a Mark Johnston runner we haven't seen this
year. Filly capable of placing at Group level later wins at 12/1 from two
well fancied fillies on STO including the 2007 Oaks winner. Nothing much
behind the first three with the only other winner in 4th and she was a
STO-to-Brighton-for-some-sea-air-and-a-soft-race type.
