SUMMARY
Typical Southwell race on Fibresand. Stiff pace set split the horses early into those that could handle the surface and the pace and those that struggled to do it or were incapable of acting on it. Leading line of 3 within a neck of each other at halfway spread out sideway. TF shown 'cheap speed' pace before and able to show it on this surface. WW travelling comfortably and the obvious winner from after about 0.5f. PW broken slowly first two runs but get away ok here and show ok pace to be within a neck of lead. JJ very free To Post and veered up the round course the wrong way before being part walked to the stalls. Slow away but made and effort to be within 1.5L of the lead at halfway but niggled along. HA in fifth at 3L+ and working hard as usual. 6th to 9th at halfway spread over 6-11 lengths off lead with other two adrift by around 15L & 25L off lead.
1st 7 at halfway produce 1st 6 home plus non-stayer TF. JJ & PW fade worst of those and race furthest over to stands' rail side = Low Draw advanatage in action on day?
WW green on debut and drift off stands' rail at Newcastle onto worse ground in ok race. SP 13/2 that day and perhaps an indication he was thought ok. Bulk of trainers debuts start at between 2/1 to 12/1 so far this year and some indication that the SP has some realtion to overall ability. But, that requires factoring in strength of race. Ran fast time but course supporting fast times at present and slower time that Arctic Feeling (in late March) and similar to Jamesway on the same day in March. Definite OR70+ but not beating much here.
CL shown little in two previous runs for Ryan and given a very hard ride from early on here. Presumably decided he needed sorting out. Which worked because by inside the last 2F he was responding and going forward. Probably helped by racing widest and closest to far rail. Plugged on to volunteer second. OR60s
HA small but a thorough trier. Looked slow on turf first two runs but got loose in the lead last time on Polytrack and persisted well enough given that head start. But recorded a rating in the upper OR50s at Wolverhampton and in line with his physical type and no scope. Not seem to handle the surface here but might just have been too slow to travel quickly on it in line with his lack-of-pace turf efforts. Trying hard but unable to be close than 3L to lead at halfway. Kept at it to get to volunteer 3rd into the last furlong but then stalling late.
Hernando Torres given an anonymous midfield ride and picking up stallers and faders late for modest effort. Low form bace and trainer struggled to get 2yo winners in recent years (needing a better class one in Hoof It to record any win in 2008-9).
SB the first runner of the season for trainer Cowell who gets regular debut wins (nornally with OR80+ kit) and tends to front-load the competitive 2yos in the early batch of FTOs. SB a full brother to Silent Wonder that the trainer struggled to win with but eventually won at 2yo in a winter race at this course. Strong support to favourite and you presume on that the horse had been tested on the surface. But, struggling on it from early on and looking green. Hanging left or threatening to for most of race until eased and head held to the right.
TW only 7/1 but in a weak race. 25L adrift of lead at halfway and got back to faders for no effort asked from jockey. Poor form level but check Market NTO.
