SUMMARY
Rail out by 18yds at 6f start and narrowing down to 7yds towards the finish (as the course narrows). Course configuration which lifts the runners away from the faster strip next to the stands rail and out to race more in centre track. Partly an effort to counteract the advantage of horses running the stands' rail. Interesting to note that the Pundits and the trainer were either unaware of the rail position or do not believe it makes any difference. Consistent talk of High Draw advantage before the race. We have not seen enough races in this configuration on unwatered going to know.
Race run at a Moderate pace and a slower time (other 6f race on card in slowish time after rain during meeting and straight course seem slower than round course). Field spread over less than 8L at halfway and a number pulling, failing to settle in various ways. First 3 home in first 4 places at Halfway and only just over 1L from leader to 4th. Leader (33/1 outsider) at halfway fade notably in last 1F and hung having still been 3rd then, 5th was LPNB who faded badly and 6th a Channon 2nd String (Robber Stone) who was pulling pretty hard for the most of the first half of the race. Progress by those behind 6th in terms of places made not amount to much in terms of ground made with first two slear and 3rd only drifting back to the 4th+ finishers late on.
Empty race on profile with only Major Dude [1], LPNB [-8] and Cathcart Castle [-14] with Profile ratings better than -20 (a very poor level) . LPNB form suspect from early season races and has looked seller type. Second place last time in a slow race with poor substance to the overall level and relative position to Bilko Pak that day suspect. Ran poorly and trainer on a string of 47 losers when he typically has winners regularly (because he runs his horses a lot rather than targetting 'Form' periods).
Which meant that Major Dude only needed to be an ok debut type by Hannon 2010 standards to win. Trainer said he was a better type early in day and supported as if he would win (aided by the lack of any worthwhile opposition). Major Dude not have to get out of 3rd gear to win ridden in 2nd rank behind the slow pace (Hughes riding the race well given the pace). Given the final time a suspect race to take the form literally and taking the distances back from Major Dude to the others an incorrect way to read the form later.
2nd & 3rd represent trainers with inconsistent 2yo records and strong debuts not common. Littmoden struggles to get 2yo wins and despite the promise shown by MM not a solid future winner profile.
Looking for 'Promise' behind given low level of form a bit suspect but St Oswald given a very easy time and making most forward progess to the end of the race. Reliable trainer who tends to peak horses STO so should improve solidly.
Some long priced support for Arctic Mirage and showed enough in race to believe this was more than just a guess. Ok build but very green in race. Threatened to make better progress inside 2F out in centre track but green and hung when pressed. One to check NTO.
Two NRs in race seem to be making a profession of not running. Cheylesmore has never run having now been a NR twice. Lucky Tricks managed to run once but has been a NR three times since. Always something, isn't it.
