SUMMARY
Stalls Stands side but rail out 6 yards to lift runners off the normal rail. Solid Pace.
Jibaal the only presentable debut for trainer in early part of season in important maiden at York. Trainer normally runs a better class one for the Maktoum family there and running shockers in the race quite common. But, they tend to improve as the stable gets going. Jibaal 5th but a long gap back from the 4th although clear of the ruck and looking like the Changeover Point. The York race has produced later runners from the 2nd & 3rd runners while the fourth was bustling up one of those two when they won. The ruck has produced winners from bigger types who ran poorly on the day through greenness (& too slow for 6f) and being held up (taught to settle) & hanging. WHich make Jibaal look ok as an OR75 type and perhaps better. Even so strong support from 2/1 in to 6/5 looked a bit hopeful.
In the race he gave a typical effort by a Johnston horse (on debut). Slow to break and struggling with the pace. Then offering to hang left in later race after he had sort of got balanced and hanging onto the back of the group. Not the Hannon type consistency. So he was making his own problems BUT had also run into a tough race and hard to believe he would have won even if competent. What was the Market support based on?
SC a smaller type that Channon winds up in early season and runs a lot and tend to find a race to win by persistence and by going North. Ths not a typical weak Nortern race and try Redcar or Catterick. Set a solid pace but expired too quickly even with that taken into account. The latest in a number poor efforts and bad fades by Channon runners recently. As with horses like Master Macho he will just bring it back and run it again soon and (like David Evans) let them run themselves back into 'form' if needs be.
The support for Jibaal seems a particularly poor idea given the fact he appeared to be faced with two better class Northern 2yos on this evidence. Both running for trainers who have proved this season that they target strong debuts and get regular FTO wins. WB talked up by the trainer in early season and looked the part here. Bigger type and strongly built. Professional in attending the pace and willing in going to lead and responding to challenge in last 1F. A horse to take seriously. Oh, and a sibling of two horses who made winning debuts for Fahey (both smaller & ready types) & trainer said this one the best of them all as a typee.
ET running for David Brown who had two FTO wins from 5 goes before this plus a strong 2nd with a horse for this owner - John Fretwell - who likes competitive debuts. A strong debut and travelling well into the last 2F. A good effort to make some sort of challenge to WB because he hung away to centre track. Pulles clear of the rest and another to take seriously.
