=== Pre Race ===

Fahey SL quote = "L’apogee is a big horse and one with a future. Whether he’s tuned in enough to win at the first time of asking in the Maiden Stakes I wouldn’t know but he’ll definitely win his maiden at some stage.".

Trainer Ron Thompson back with a training licence in 2015 after a break when he was probably 'retired'. Porcupine Creek bought at the lesser Tatts 2yo sale in early May for close to the median for that sale. Breeze Video makes him look ok in the gather. Ok muscled and moving ok. But. probably on the smaller side and that affecting the price. Also, only a medium speed action in the breeze and probably an average time. Usable low level one. Starting at 6f seems another clue.

Red Artist the 7th most expensive lot at the same sale as PCreek. 3 made 6 figures with the highest at 230k. Presume it was a 'Willoughby Project' buy to some level with Crisford getting the "same" service as MaJo. Breeze Video shows RA already going in a faster canter towards the end of the gather phase. Medium size with body length, stronger front and strong neck. Average use of range in breeze and perhaps a slightly faster than average cadence. Drifts Left throughout the breeze starting on the far rail and ending up the wrong side of the markers well towards the stands rail. Rolls along ok in a balanced manner but not looking fast. As well as hanging starting to stall late on. Was this really a 'Fast breeze time allied to a strong run out' that the Willoughby Project would be looking for?

Worth noting at this point the 'gut feeling' that the breezes watched so far seem a more professional set overall (humans & horses) than the memory of 2014. Suspect this is an incorrect assumption caused by only seeing the better & readier end of breezers so far. There are probably still a large set of wild & duff ones still to see that the trainers they are now with are trying to assess and fix.

=== Post Race ===

[June 15th] Purcupine Creek with, self inflicted, excuses for a poor run. Wearing and XNB and lived up to that by running too free. Jk fighting him until a bump at Halfway saw PC hang right to the stands rail on his own. Jk then decided to kick the race off early and driving PC along soon after Hf and probably in the lead. Stalling and fading by 1f out because of that. Looking an ok size and build in the group. Drops to 5.1f STO on a flat course. Presume they might let him roll along rather than a pointless fight. Run better STO than this final result suggests?

[June 24th] L'Apogee a bit more promise than the downside take on the yearling picture. Still perhaps just smaller medium and IP body length but ok power and more than 1yo pic suggested. Running too free from early on and jk settled for an Educational Intro and held him to the back. Going ok to 2f out but then looking a bit green and hanging left rather than picking up. A minor plus for not fading off that but responding a bit to 1f out and showing some range in front. Bigger than RA?

[July 12th] Meister just a medium size IC if solidly built. Green overall and rolling around before the last 2f and losing touch soon into it. Even taking account of the inexperience below average promise for the expensive price. Strongish build but just a medium frame.

[July 14th] Baby Ballerina looking promising in early season and able to win an early Maiden/Auction. Career has not developed smoothly. Too free STO over 5f at BVLY then running in the Marygate over a fast 5f. Up to 6f here and still running too freely. Hauled back in stages to end up 3R but still climbing onto back of others by pulling even when buried behind. Solid effort at 2f out given that. Starting to stall and fade in last 0.5f. Niggle that she looked less 'big' here than she did in the early season races. In danger of missing the chance to win outside Nursery level. Still looking 70+ on size and effort here but needing a Northern maiden win soon. Steps back to a fast 5f STO, from a so-so draw, so went back to check how she ran in the Marygate. Will they forget about trying to settle her and just let her go forward at CATT?

Hard to read the Baby Ballerina effort in the Marygate. Slow start incl a bump and then either held back to last early or lacking the pace to go with the others zipping away. In last through Halfway and jk asking her to make a forward effort already. A bit head up and not making any ground, very hard to do against a lot of zippy 5f fillies still going forward, for 1.5f. Last into the last 1f and finally starting to make some places into the group by the line. Which would explain the step up to 6f NTO because she was perceived as staying on. But, BB will have to start better and run a different race to compete at CATT with real 5f pace fillies. Get prominent early and not give away head starts. Hard to make ground back at downhill CATT unless the others go berserk.
