SUMMARY
GF in early AM as on Decs. Watering as 5mm Fri, 5mm Sat, 3mm Sun.

Rail Fully in

Medium to Stiff ENE Wind = Close to Direst Headwind to the intersection, 3/4 Headwind in the HS.

=== Pre Race ===

Hannon jks = Hughes (Toledo), Moore (Torment), Levey (Phantom Flipper).

Breeze Video for Ashford Island a mixed story. Looks at least medium or a bit taller and perhaps a longer neck. Medium build and perhaps a touch narrow? Free and FFH in the gather. Gets on with it in the 1st 2f in line with his willing attitude. Negative in the way he moves. Had a permanent knee curl in front and a medium or a bit faster action. But uses little range F&B which puts a lot of pressure on his stride turnover to get anywhere. In line with that fading late on. In PRev may well be a positive but needs a movement check.

Danecase's Breeze Video mostly positive. Looks a balanced set up and readyish type of the sire but a bit bigger and better built than some of the 'neat' ones. But, what goes with that seems to be just a medium speed action and a more galloping action showing some range in front. Moves along straight and overall effect ok but does seem to be working harder & not just floating along. Perhaps caused by him still being up behind so a bit of a 'bound' to link F to B. Ought to be 75+ on size but ok for 6f on fast?

human Nature looking smaller medium and ready type in his Breeze Video. Smaller and less powerful than Dancase? (Check PRev). But, professional and willing and most notably uses the range he has well, F&B. Faster action than Danecase and presumably did a faster breeze. Looks a point-and-shoot type for FTO but how much scope?

Sir Roderic entered and ready to run in April.

=== Post Race ===

Interesting field on Profile and seemed to fulfil that expectation although a somewhat messy race and heaped finish mixing up the abilities a bit and compressing the ratings range. A big part of this seemed to be a too stiff pace set by Toledo on the rail with a number of fancied horses in attendance. The field well stretched at Halfway. The too stiff pace meaning that none of the prominent racers near the rail through halfway finishing the race off fully. Their folding back in the last 1f meant lesser types from midfield at Halfway (Willsy & Jinko's Approval) able to make 4-5th and looking threatening for the places at one point with mid-track plugging on. Mixing them in with some more promising types for thew future. The Halfway positions to final placings read like the Pacemakers falling back throught he field by the finish and even a couple of adrift types at Halfway (Goodwood Zodiac & Cogent) able to make VTLs from Halfway. Slowish looking time even given a Headwind.

Torment looking green and driven along on the rail after Halfway. Swicthed off the rail by Moore when Torment starting to stay on well in the last 0.5f+ and found a path through the folding frontrunners for a clear win. Torment adding to a good day for Visual profile clues. Looking a likeable and heavily built yearling in the Highclere presentation day. Only niggle over whether he could shift his bulk. Interesting in that context that in 215 Hannon says Torment is "smashing" & "perhaps too heavy but doesn't move like that". Saying they couldn't wait to really work him. But, he would not have won this without the too stiff pace allowing him to stay on.

Menai a bit smaller than expected in VRev but strongly made. A bit fizzy AP. Frank did ok to get him to 2nd and 1 off the rail. Looked like he lacked a bit of pace in the last 2f+ and staying on best of the prominent racers att he finish. Very straight and correct mover and comes across like a galloper. Should go 7f.

Human Nature a medium and neat one in the Group and ran fine but niggle over his size and scope remain. Just a ready 70s racer?

Toledo running to free and Hughes never getting a proper hold on him. Running a bit head up and unbalanced with the jk and horse not in synch. Ran fine until fading back late on. Believable 80+.

Not sure about the 4th/5th home and check whether they are 70+ or not. Surbett lookign a solid size and build and much mor einterseting. Seemed to run the whole race doing the same inefficient things. In 2R on the rail and head to the right and not really balanced. But running promisingly. Check whether 80+.

Check the PRev to see whether anything else of 70+ interest. Why was Phantom Flipper at such a long SP and never put into the race? Not far behind Menai on debut and at least a solid medium size and 70+. Even if you read him as the Hannon 3rd string he shouldn't be 14/1 and he shouldn't be running so miserably at the back. What was going on? [Update = Jk made a WTRB report that PF was "never travelling". Given the Market & the vibes you could imagine that excuse was lodged with the stewards before the jk went out for the race....]

=== Post VP ===

Intersting field in VP and a good number 70+. A range of types but a notable number of heavily built lads but front heavy with it.

Torment looking as expected if you had watched his yearling video. A touch short but deep through the body and heavily built. Just about fit enough but not mentally sharp. As noted above would not have won a fastish time race witht he frontrunners finishing the race off. Green and niggled along at times in the race then staying on well in last 1f to run through the stallers. But, clearly has the power to be 80+ & winning when not that ready as a plus. Might well be better at 7f. Solid scope to develop.

Menai also strongly built but a differet set-up to Torment, for eg. A bit taller and less broad. Heavily built front and tails away a bit behind. Head looks too big for him. 80+ on size and power but could be more neatly made. Moves very straight but looking a galloper and staying on to get 2nd here. Did not show any particular kick at 2f out. Ok scope to develop 7f and 80+ type.

Useful to have Human Nature in a field of chunky ones as a reference to match the others against. Also as a reminder of how much money the Maktoums and Godolphin have spent on small/smaller ones over the years. If you are of an honest and facing-up-to-the-facts type then hard to see how you could continue in a Bloodstock Advisor role looking back at the 100s of Millions wasted. At some point someone must question whether what they are doing has any validity. But, that probably isn't built into Human Nature, biases to bury that sort of thinking are. Not sure how John Ferguson would sleep at nights without those biases and blinkers. You wonder if Ferguson and co. might have seen through some of their own protective thinking if they were spending their own money with failures hurting them directly.

Human Nature looking a smaller medium ready on in his Breeze Video and exactly as advertised in PRev. Fit and ready for the day with a mature attitude. Seemed to show what he can do and have less scope than the average here. Seems an odd use of 115k..

Willsy & Jinko's Approval questioned above as to whether their proximity att he finish a negative for the form. Having seen the pictures that take has been toned down a bit and both are 70+. Willsy a typical (now) smaller one that Channon has but neatly made and well prepared. 70ish and lacxking scope. Jinko's Approval given a Profile rating on his poor FTO effort and lacking visual input. As the VP picture shows he has 70+ size and build.

Toldeo Hughes ridden and presume the Hannon 1st string. Trainer just ok comments in 215 and you start to wonder whether Hughes is toning down his claim on 1st strings in his last season before he retires. Giving the others a go? Storng enough medium size and fit for the day. For example, Hannon probably expected Torment to prove a better 2yo in time but be less fit and sharp for the day. Toledo bounced out and across to the rail by Hughes to lead and none his "teach to settle'" skulking in midfield suggesting an attempt at a compete-to-win debut. But, Toledo running too free and Hughes not settling him. Fading late on. Suspect he is in the 78-82 range and fine for an Open Maiden win.

Surbett just a medium size in the group but strongly built and a bit front heavy. Green and colty in the prelims and unprofessional in the race. Ok scope to develop and 73-6 range.

Usable ones behind without any looking certain Open Maiden types (75+). Goodwod Zodiac medium and less strongly made in the group. Say 70. Cogent short and fat. Being brought along for nurseries and has the bulk to get to around 70 but limited to below that by size and/or movement?

Sir Roderic and expensive buy for Millman and he doesn't get lots-of-goes at that level like some buyers do (so they can big up the odd lucky god one and bury the rest). As the picture shows lean and fit for the day. Lacking some power and scope. Might get to around 70 but presumably will end up at lessert tracks to find a winnable race.

Danecase interesting because he looked bigger than Human Nature in his Breeze video and neat enough made. But looking like a 7f+ galloper if his movement improved from the part bounding he showed at the breeze. Bigger than HN but less tha neatly made in PRev. A bit front heavy but a less than pleasing set-up. Some early pace but soon broken by trying to go with the too stiff pace here. Suspect he will be a 7f+ nursery type and on size might be 70+ but the set-up stopping that?

Ashford Island also a different appearance from the Breeze Video take. Shorter and heavy build with a bit of a belly. Neck is a bit long. Has some scope to develop but didn't prove his movement is ok.

Phantom Flipper less build and size than many but fit and ready and ok for around 70 if a bit underpowered. But no excuse for the poor run (which felt pre-ordained) in PRev. Another being given a quiet time S-3TO for nurseries given he has a 3rd in a strongish maiden already achieved?

Ron's Ballad the smallest and most lightly made in the field. Finished in the runt's position. Low 50s?
