SUMMARY
GFG by Race Time. GGF in early am from G on Decs. Medium to Stiff WNW Wind = Close to Direct Tailwind.

Far Side Course. Stalls Stands' Side.

Fast conditions with a Tailwind and consider time in that context. For example the following 7f Listed Free Handicap won by useful 2yo of 2014 Home Of The Brave in just 0.04s outside the Track Record.

Gifted Master a slow start and green but able to get back to the group comfortably with the pace barely average. GM travelling the best from halfway but in 2R on the Stands' Rail. Got a convenient split when needed and Jk Tylicki able to put the horse into the gap then take a pull and wait until into the final 1f to ask for the final effort with which he went clear. GM the strongest build in a mixed field. Ravenhoe had looked a small and ready type in the Brocklesby and had got a touch outpaced in a slower race on easier going and won by lower level plugging on. In this group he looked barely average size and after a slowish break found the pace too much to even get involved. Brocklesby form looking moderate so far with the 1st, 2nd & 4th beaten since.

== Post Full VRev ===

Average or a bit below pace without looking a real Slow one. Poplar drawn next to rail and hustled to lead but running a touch Free & held after 0.5f gone and held back. Which meant some free running from others including Gifted Master & Ravenhoe recovering from being 6th/Last after slow starts ending up climbing over the LdgLn while in 2R after 1f gone. Race played out a bit like a sub-2f sprint at the finish with 6 of the field struggling to look any different from the others and plugging on in similar ways. A number not helped by not handling the undulations (why run a Breeze Sale here with green horses?). The obvious exception being Gifted Master who looked miles better than this field and the first example of 'something different' (good different not suspect) this season.

Trainer Palmer highlighted in the 2014 Review article as about the top performer amongst a group of younger (all Public School?) trainers making a mark over the last 2-3 years. Had a very good day with this win added to by Home Of The Brave winning the Listed Free Handicap and New Providence 2nd in the Gp3 Nell Gwyn. PRev guy complimentary about Palmer's skills in handling GM here with the horse giving various problems in the Prelims. The following picture shows Palmer (blue suit) saddling GM and note it is out in the open and not in a stall/box as normal and also note that GM is displaying one way in which he found the Prelims too exciting.

GM a slow start but made the ground back comfortably as the pace lulled. Always travelling best in 2R on the Rail and the Jk waiting inside the last 2f as the others made their effort. As Poplar rolled off the rails GM a bit slow in picking up that the Jk wanting him to get into the gap. But, did it easily when he got the message and the Jk able to wait again knowing he had the race won (before the last 1f) and able to treat the race like work. GM pulling clear in the last 1f and some niggles about those behind but clearly higher class effort. With the kick he has in fast conditions and a strong build then competitive in Group races and would fit in the Norfolk Stakes field, for example, on this.

Trainer Appleby has made his name improving cast-offs from other stables and his 2yo record is still developing. He has never had a debut win and the small number of individual 2yo winners he has had have either run around 4th FTO as the good end or further back. Which made City Of Stars being supported in the Market look hopefulness. A medium one with a solid build and Open Maiden Class but how much better? Up to 80s? Finished 2nd in the race but travelled 4th/5th best for most of it. Never looking like he was travelling smoothly and niggled along at various times and driven along before 2f out. Green to some extent but the way he stayed on in the last 1f+ suggesting he was perhaps finding this a fast test. Hard driven through the last 2f but kept responding and pulling away in a clear 2nd by the finish. Solid 75+ and seems likely 6f+ ok.

Haughmond a likeable size and type and should be solid 80+. Green in the Prelims and took ages to load and generally looking like he was a bit wary of the whole experience. Travelled probably 2nd best in the race (Leading Line) but the wariness came into play again in the penultimate 1f when he got unbalanced on the downhill. Then did not pick up well into the last 1f and still looking like this was learning as he went. Ok to follow. Trainer Burker had a terrific 2014 and has had more runners than typical early. But, they haven't looked ready as a group and the trainer's methods of peaking later in the season still seem in place.

Ravenhoe giving weight away as a (moderate qual) Conditions race winners. In line with the view of the Brocklesby as a weaker edition with ready types in Ravenhoe looking a bit overpowered in this Group and even a real 75? Got a slow start but recovered ok. Seemed to get blocked 2f out and not picking up as well as the Jk expected in the 4th 1f. Which saw jk de Sousa delivering his hardest thwack LH with the whip coming to the 1f pole. Which the horse responding to by jinking Righr away from the blow and getting unbalanced. He then took time to get going and some late plugging on. Jk de Sousa made a laughable WTRB report saying the horse had lost its action towards 1f out without mentioning it was because it had reacted to the whip.

Swirral Edge still owned by trainer Brown. Solid size but not looking fit nor ready in the Prelims. A bit green and another to find the downhill bit too much and started hanging right. Faded a bit earlier and probably because of lack of readiness. Ok scope to get late 70s and okish for 80+.

Salt Lake Sooty a very cheap one with no pedigree and with a Trainer with no record. Ended up running widest and too freely with the head to the left overall. Seemed to make an ok effort in Context at 2f out before a late fade. An Ok size in the group and should be usable 60s. Check if any better.

Trainer Littmoden has changed from being a '2yo Trainer' to one with a poor record with them over a long period. Didn't he win the Brocklesby eons ago? Poplar enough size to be 70+ but the trainer's methods a worry so one to leave alone on that probably. Led on the rail then held back when running a bit free. Ok effort at 2f out but then fading very quickly once headed = problem?
