SUMMARY
GFG in early AM as on Decs.

3mm Watering on Thursday.

CoC quote = "Rail dolled out up to 6 yards in Back and Home Straights, and 5 yards around Home Bend, adding 7 yards to Round Course distances."

Medium- wind as a 3/4+ Tailwind in the HS.

=== Pre Race ===

Trainer Balding has targeted 7f+ types in recent years (dropping some of the sprint types unless OBs). Usually sends a solid 75 one to this race and often better. Had 4 x debuts at 7.1f at the course in 2014 with 3 x 3rds at SPs from 8/1 (Group 1 winner Elm Park) to 25/1 (in this race by a disappointing type who never learnt to settle in later races). 3 of the 4 were Open Maiden winners, and some better obviously. Balding just 'ok' comments about Both Sides in 215 say he is a tough and hardy sort to crack on with. His dam won on debut in May of her year at 33/1.

Breeze Video for California Lad showing a medium size on with a solid build. Above average body length. Uses range F&B & a bit 'too much'. Average cadence at most and looks a bit disorganised through the breeze and a laboured at the end. That seems to be partly because of the overuse of range and not fully controlling it. Looks like a galloper trying to up his cadence a bit at times to suit the rider but that leg speed isn't their.

Latest work video for Machine Learner from 9th June working with unraced 2yo The Major & one called Strathearn. Goes best of the 3 and finishing off without the rider having to ask for any effort. TMajor 2L back and Strathearn dropped. Looking a solid medium size and build.

=== Post Race ===

First point to make is if the huge amount the rail was out, all around the bend until well into the HS, added only 7yds to the race distance then its a terrific visual illusion. Oh, and most Athletics stadiums have all their staggered starts in the wrong place. You wouldn't want to run in a 400 metre race measured by these guys. Unless you have paid the appropriate amount to get the best (shortest) lane.

First 7.1f race of the season here and a reminder that the peculiar set up of the bend and the uphill finish mean that prominent racers that see the 7f out, off usable Paces are very, very, very, hard to overhaul. Which means this race, which had a usable pace as Abernathy proved, needs some explaining. How did 4 of the first 5 through halfway end up miles back and why are all those deep closers in the first 6 home? The Halfway to Final positions read like a raging pace war.

It was a usable pace and the normal well stretched out field around the tight bend. The pace got even slower in the HS which allowed those well back to close up before the start of the final sprint at 2f out. For example, Von Blucher had moved up from being around 7L back to be less than 3L back at 2F out and Abernathy was in the leading line. That partly explains the higher halfway positions in the first 6 home. The fact that the leading pair through halfway faded back quickly at 2f out for different reasons ensured that deeper closers making their clear runs out wide had the best go at making progress.

Abernathy miles too free on debut and ran poorly because of that. Used his basic pace more productively here by going forward from the widest stall to be 3rd to the bend and running prominently to a usable pace. 2 wide around the bend but smooth progress to be in the leading line 2f out and a strong effort from there. Ought to be 80+ and Appleby's STO record now 4/8 with another 2nd and a big profit.

Von Blucher another one owned by 'the wife' for Gosden after they have sold off Jack Hobbs for a big profit this year. Gosden's 2nd 7f debut of the year and the earliest batch are usually solid 75+ types and the best can compete to win. The first of the batch - Hayadh - won the first 7f race of the year and VB might well have won this but for starting a bit further back than Abernathy. VB looking very, very, heavily built and and perhaps a 'monster' (check) but still moving fine despite the bulk. Abernathy a substantial bruiser himself but VB looking 1-2 sizes bulkier as he closed on him to the line. VB looking top end promising.

See You When one of 3 x Hannon reps and ridden by Fortune. Trainer usually sends 75+ season winner types to this race and two 80+ reps in 2014. SYW looking just a neat Medium/Medium one compared to the bigger paird ahead and SYW fading late. Ran professionally and able to make his progress out wide fro 3R at halfway. Around 75 and less scope than the first 2 home.

Machine Learning well back on the bend then angling out in the CZ to be behind VB towards 2f out. Left behind by that one's effort and ML taking time to get going. Still 8th into the last 1f but staying on as if he needs a stiffer test and lacked an immediate kick here uphill. But, ok promise for 75. Both Sides staying on with ML then just stalling near the line. BB having to angle out in the HS to get out from behind the roadblock near the rails. A bit better kick than ML at 2f out. Both looking medium sized and lacking kick stayers and ok for around 75 without being definite to convert in a solid Open Maiden STO (say).

Hornsby a bit smaller but a competent Appleby debut. But sub 75 STO even if he snaps together well? Rateel a lesser type in the group to explain his inability to use his prominent position. River Thames seemed to come with a minor 'reputation' but just a medium one and smallest of the 1st 3 through halfway. Did not pick up much 2f out and no obvious reason for the fade. [June 20th = Rewatched the Hornsby debut with the knowledge he seems a first string for Godolphin of 3 runners in a NMKJ 7f maiden. Also with the thought some PRevs had him 80+. Looks a strong build in the video but a shorter type. A bit green and doesn't give the impression of being athletic. But, a bit green and probably not fit enough on the day. Perhaps not helped by a bump on the rail beofre 2f out in showing what he is capable of. But, even after a second look would prefer to see if there is a bigger and better prospect in the NMKJ race. ]

Whitecliffe Park Hughes ridden and, typically, the jk got his horse to an ideal position on this track. Controlling the pace on the rail. WP looking an ok height and medium build if lacking the power of the biggest lads. But, ran much too freely and never settled which would explain his fade. Inherent Vice sitting behind WP on the rail and also running too free (not as much as WP). As the WTRB made said IH then finding himself in a pocket on the rail in the last 2f with WP & RT folding back onto him. IH with nowhere to go and unable to show what forward effort he might, or might not, have left.
