SUMMARY
GGF in early am as on Decs. 3mm Watering on Monday.

Stiff to Strong 1/4+ Headwind.

=== Post Race ===

Slowish time for the conditions and an unsatisfactory race. Average pace at most an probably below average and usable. Despite the GGF going the usual 'hail of divots' on the downhill secion which can only be the horse stripping off the wet surface turf from the hard base beneath. How deep is 3mm of Watering going to get into soil with a thick covering of grass on it?

Ok, so they are kicking a few divots up, so what? The first 3f of this race are downhill and the 3 x smaller and nippier types didn't bother about divots and a loose surface and jogged along in the first 3 places with Bint Aldar getting an especially easy lead and attending by the small (& limited to low to mis 50s?) Narvla. Just behind them the small but bulky colt Mr Stravinsky. Probably best to read this result as Bint Aldar managing to see the limited Narvla off after a tussle into the last 1f and Bint Aldar staying on again as she did on debut. BA presumably ok for 7f. Mr Stravinsky no taller than BA but bulkier. Going a bit better than BA at 2f out but not picking up much and stalling and hanging right before the last 1f. MrS looking as if he needs to go back to a fast 5f perhaps. BA ok 70 and a bit in a nursery.

The prblem with the divots meant that the bigger makes all lost ground downhill and dropping back. Most wandering around and looked uncomfortable on the loose ground downhill. Galesburg just a (smaller)-medium one and less bulk than BA. Able to make progress soon after halfway and be in the leading line at 2f out but just able to match the winner's effort but fading in the last 0.5f. Galesburg looking barely a 70.

Candelisa looking a bigger 7f galloper type on debut and STO at 6f again a bit odd. He lost more ground than Galesburg downhill and 4-5L back at halfway and not balanced. If you had been told a MaJo stayer was in the field wandering about and losing ground was in the field you would have picked out Candelisa as that horse (if you didn't know) because he looked like the bigger & boaty MaJo 2yo running over the wrong trip. Candelisa 5th at 1f out still well back and hanging out to centre track from the rail at halfway. Finally picked up and going forward off the slower pace and not handling the track late on and staying on well as you would expect. Ok for 75 but he must be at 7f 3TO, surely. Horse jink left a bit near the line and the jk fell off soon after.

Flanders Flame green and got well adrift on debut. His run here suggesting he is very green still but quite possibly slow of movement as well as brain. Drawn widest and broke okish but dropping back on the downhill with the jk active and probably as much to do with cluelessness as not handling the going. Minor progress out wide but never properly putting his head down and going forward. Medium at most if a touch better built than size. 60s Nursery project?

Trainer burke seems to know the quality he has before his 2yos runs and even in a terrific year like 2014 (where most things won something) the SP on debut held enough info about competitiveness on the day and overall ability. Carbutt's Ridge a bit like Flanders Flame in looking clueless and not going forward downhill. Perhaps a similar size and a bit less build. How active the jk got with the whip in the last 2f a niggle over whether there is an attitude problem there. But, another one that the trainer is presumably bringing along slowly for a nursery mark that gives him some chance.
