===============

Trainer Cox's 2yos are normally ready to compete to a high level within their ability FTO. In most seasons the number of his individual 2yo season winners who make the first 3 on debut is higher (often a by a lot) than those that finish 4th or worse. He typically starts his season with some smaller medium 5f types and they often do not progress much and can fail to win. In 2014 his first 7 debuts included 3 that won as 2yos (all fiinished 2nd FTO) and 4 that did not (finished 6th or 7th FTO). In 2013 only 1 of his four early debuts won as a 2yo with Listed winner Beldale Memory a FTO winner. The success for Beldale Memory typical in that the earliest debuts often have his better 2yos in. In 2012 his first 3 debut included Gp3 placed Well Acquainted (3rd in the Brocklesby) and Reckless Abandon a FTO success as his 3rd runner. Older Group winner Lethal Force did not win as 2yo but was 2nd at 33/1 (at ASCT and a course to take particular note of Cox debuts overall) as the 3rd debut of the 2011 season.

With that background, and with the established form level low, Soapy Aitken ought to make the first 3 if he was 72+ usable and compete to win if better than that. The Market did seem to know (see RIPN on the day) that SA was likely a better one and Kirby riding a real plus, both for implied quality and for his handling of 2yos. SA travelling comfortably in 2R and taking time to get going when asked to pull out and make his effort and a bit 'wild' and unbalanced at times (mildly reminiscent of Reckless Abandon careering across the track with Kirby for his debut win). Kirby riding out the problems to get SA to go forward enough to win. If Spencer had been aboard he would have joined SA in the arms-in-the-air panicking and they would be still be looking for the pair.

SA looking perhaps smaller medium (check pictures) but a ready sprinter (as his pedigree says) and with pace and zip above his size (as both his dam and sibling did who finished 5th & 6th in the Queen Mary without ever having the size to retain that relative level). Balanced mover and a 5f type. Both trainer & Jk saying afterwards they didn't see any reason to step up to 6f given SA's speed. Cox noting that SA had done all his work 'on the bridle' at home so the request for an full effort inside the last 2f here in line with SA learning as he went. Likeable effort as an early 5f 2yo and looks up to Listed class (say OR88+) but check scope.

=== Post VRev ===

Main point following the Full VRev and looking throught he Paddock Input is that it was a below average maiden and tempered the enthusiasm for Soapy Aitken a bit given what he had to beat. The April Maiden races atthe track have produced a lot of high class horses over the years but the winner here looked the only real 75+ in a thinnish field. The race was won by 2-3yo Group winner in 2014 and go back to 2003-04 and the Group 1 winners La Cucaracha & Goodricke won it. Listed winning 2yo won it in 2011 and Group 2 winning 2yos Art Connoiseur & Hellvelyn won the April April miaden rac ehere, etc.

Soapy Aitken green in the prelims including unseating Jk Kirby in the PRing. Green at times in the race but too fast for what he had to beat. Smaller medium and a ready sprinter lacking scope. Would expect him to try Listed level at least but check whether he he an averagely competitive one at that level or a bit lower (downgrade the 88 note a bit)

Rogues' Gallery a good Marker horse who looked in top condition and ran a competent race and finished the race off respectably. But another smaller medium on around 70 and perhaps just upper 60s and vulnerable in average Open Maidens.

Tikthebox another smaller medium ready sprinter and at least as tall as SA. But lacking the neat set-up of SA and nt showing the same natural movement with some range. Ran a mostly competent race other than being a bit free until hanging as he tired. A mid 60s type lacking scope.

Bukle smaller, less powerful and less neatly made than either SA or TTbox and hard to see why James Millman thought he would "improve past RG" having run against that one FTO. Seemed to have every chance to show what he could do and came up short. 60.

Dressed In Fur had veered after the start and dropped the Jk FTO. With that context the Jk seemed to give him an odd/Educational ride here depending on you viewpoint. Drawn on the rail and started ok so no veering but the Jk then sat quiet until the horse was adrift on the rail. He then rode him vigorously for the last 3f incl using the whip in the last 1f. Almost as if he was seeing if the horse would behave then run on through others. DIF did runb on to some extent to get to 5th. But a small to smaller one and the attitude still a bit suspect. Low-mid 50s?

Odd start to the season for trainer Evans who would typically run a lot of his 2yos int he first 2 weeks of the season and most would be ready to show what they could do and the better ones compete for the places. A much later start this season and his 2 x FTOs here only the 9th/10th debuts of the year. Of the 10 one has won FTO and one 2nd in photo having lead for most of the race. The other 8 have seen 7 run huge negative ratings and looking clueless often and not as fit as a group as normal. Edgeoftheforest a 'better' debut in rating a bit above zero. But, another small one and 50s at best.

On of the terrible debuts than ran well in a much better race shortly after on STO and lead the race. Willaway out of an early season 2yo winner for Evans who has produced garbage so far. Willaway having to be driven along for most of the race and then hanging to centre track into the last 2f and then bumped wide by Rio Glamorous. Willaway of minor interest because a smaler one but bulky and deep. If the problem here was greenery and not attitude then check how she goes STO and if fitter for that.

In an underwhelming field for an Open Maiden which has produced good 2yos over a long period Rio Glamourous another smaller one although solidly made and looks a usable 60s sprinter. But, veered right out of the stalls and then showed some speed to get back involved and running too freely. Veering right again in the last 2f and no response after that. Still very raw but an ok low level Nursery development type for Ron.
