Background Information
  • Timothy Jarvis. Son of Disqualified Trainer Alan (A.P.) Jarvis. 49yo in 2014 and finally granted a Licence in early June 2014 to take over his Father's Stables at Twyford after his father was deemed an 'unsuitable person to train' earlier in 2014 and lost his Licence. Timothy had been working as Jarvis senior's Assistant for many years.
  • Initially denied a Licence and only granted one with conditions attached to his Father in terms of him having no role in training the horses. To quote - The conditions include that Alan Jarvis must not be granted access to the yard or represent his son on the racecourse. He is also banned from acting as a spokesman in terms of racing, and must not be issued with a badge or pass that would give him access to any restricted areas on the racecourse like the weighing room or parade ring. Many of the horses had moved to be trained by Karl Buke (Alan's son-in-law & Timothy's brother-in-law) but were reported to have returned when the licence was granted. Several years ago horses had made the reverse journey when Karl Burke lost his Licence. A tremendously sorry tale all around.
  • Alan Jarvis had held a training Licence since 1969 until early 2014 when his application to continue was denied. The BHA published a very lengthy summary of the reasons for denying the application. The financial details were very complicated but, to an outsider on reading the details, Alan Jarvis seems to have been trading insolvently for most of the period from the late 1970s onwards. He had been (close to?) bankrupted at various times and also on other occasions entered into Voluntary Agreements to repay his debts in stages. Jarvis had used a variety of business devices such as empty 'Holding Compamies' and assigning debts to other family members, to somehow continue trading for 35-40 years while in some form of debt.
  • A regular Creditor of Jarvis over may years had been Doncaster Bloodstock Auctions (DBS) and Jarvis had a history of not paying for horses he had bought. It was when this company finally 'cracked' in over long-term debts that he was declared bankrupt and lost his licence. Again, to an outsider the response was how on earth he managed to be a trainer for so long? Jarvis' reaction to being denied a Licence were as bald & barefaced as you would expect for someone who clearly felt the World owed him a living. He appealed to the BHA, railed on TV against the BHA and DBS, amongst others. Suggesting it 'all would have been alright' if dreadful people like the DBS hadn't wanted their millions of pounds paid back to them after only several years of waiting. Hard to see Alan Jarvis sticking to the conditions attached to Timothy's licence with his mind-set of he having done nothing wrong and it is all the other ungrateful wotsits who are the problem.
