First Season Sires for 2006 - Background Information

  2. 2006 First Season Sires Summary Table

1. Explanation of Table Information and Links

The table in the other section of this article covers the main First Season Sires you should expect to see represented by 2yos in the 2006 season. This section provides details on the information in the table and the links from it.

1.1 Table Links

The table may be added to but currently there are two onward links. Clicking on the name of the Sire in the first column will bring up the 2006 Season page for that sire in the 2005 format. This page includes details about the sire's racing record, in particular the 2yo season. For the majority of sires there is also an onward link to their picture. Where the Sire's own sire has a 2005 information page this is also linked to the page. In the case of three of the sire's there is also a link to the page to the latest offspring of their dam which includes full details of the mare's previous foals.

For the majority of sires there is also a "[1yo pics]" link in their name column. This links to a page with examples of the yearlings (i.e. "1yos") that they had sold at public auction. The pictures have been chosen because they were available and not because they represent a particular sample, or their 'best' examples. Pictures are not available for the majority of yearlings at the sales although the Goffs Sales did a very good job in 2005 of collecting their own pictures at the sales.

1.2 Table Information

Much of the information in the table is self explanatory but a few items need to be noted. The first column gives the horses name and it's height were available. For example the sire Act One is 16.1 hands high as given in the table. See the glossary section on this site if you require an explanation of the use of 'hands' in denoting a horse's height. The second column gives the sire's own sire.

The 'Location' column gives the Stud at which the sire stands when in Europe for the most part. Note that many of the Coolmore and Maktoum sires will be 'Shuttle Sires' and will move to the Southern Hemisphere (usually Australia) to cover mares outside of the European (i.e. Northern Hemisphere breeding season.

The 'Fee' column usually gives the cost of having a mare covered by the stallion currently and not in 2003 when these sires first went to stud.

The 'Sales Average/Median' columns give information covering yearlings actually sold at British and Irish Sales by the sires to mid December 2005. Yearlings which did not reach their reserve price (equals 'Not Sold') or were bought back by their owners (and therefore 'Retained') are not included. The figures are split by Colts and Fillies. The figures in brackets after the 'C' and 'F' in the sales average give the actual numbers of yearling sold in t hat category. For example, Act One's figures cover 14 colts and 13 fillies. These figures are not repeated in the 'Sales Median' column because these figures cover the same set of sales.

For those who do not understand the term 'Median' a short description is useful. The Median figure is produced by ranking all the sire's yearling sales in a group from highest to lowest. The 'middle' figure down this ranking is then chosen as the Median figure. If there are an even number of figures in the list the middle two are chosen, added together and divided by two to get the Median. Why bother with a Median figure? The main reason is that averages can be misleading and distorted by a single, or small number, of notably high prices. If a sire has 5 yearlings sold, for example, and four sell for 15,000 gns and one sells for 40,000 gns the average figure is 20,000 gns but 80% of his yearlings made less than that so it is not a representative figure. Comparing the Average and Median figures for the sire gives an indication of how 'consistent' the sales prices were (how small the overall range was).

The final column gives a brief summary of the ratings given to yearlings by the sire that B2yoR rated at the sales. The figure in bold is the Average rating given to all his yearlings reviewed. The higher the figure the better. The figure in brackets following is the total number of yearlings by that sire rated. B2yor uses a 50 to 90 rating system with a 70+ being considered a benchmark of an individual with potential to compete well in open maidens at 2yo. Horses rated below 60 are usually poor to moderate athletes at 2yo. The other two figures in this column note how many of the sire's 2yos were rated above 70 (noted at 70+ in the table) and how may below 60 (noted  <60). Act One had 11 yearlings rated with 2 being rated 70+ and 2 less than 60 (and, by implication, 7 rated in the 60s). The more individuals a sire has rated 70+ the better and a good number rated less than 60 is a bad sign.
