Races: Questions covered in this section are:-
  1. How many 2yo races were run in each season?
  2. What was the breakdown by Types of races?
  3. What was the breakdown by Class of race?
  4. What was the breakdown by race distances?
  5. How many races are run during each month of the season?
  6. How has the number of races on All-Weather surfaces changed?

1. How many 2yo races were run in each season?

Season Total Races Fillies' Only Males Only (C&G)
2002 942 142 (15.0%)
2003 996 146 (14.6%)
2004 998 153 (15.3%)
2005 998 165 (16.5%) 31 (3.1%)
2006 960 174 (18.1%) 38 (4.0%)
2007 1,030 183 (17.8%) 25 (2.4%)
2008 1,048 189 (18.0%) 34 (3.2%)
2009 1,084 186 (17.2%) 32 (3.0%)
Note:- Increase in fillies' only races 2005-6.

The 2006 season was always slightly behind schedule in terms of number of races run from early April onwards. The very wet October then caused a range of meetings to be abandoned (most which would have included divided 2yo maiden events) to cause the shortfall in number of races. In 2007 Paco Boy won a race also open to 3yos and Kingsgate Native won the all-aged Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.

2009 62 42 52 184 536 135 30 43 1,084
Note: (a)  3 New Listed Races in 2005, 2 before the normal (approx) June 1st start date for 2yos. 1 extra in 2006
(b) 4 fewer Listed races in 2007 including the downgrade of the 10f Zetland Stakes. The Rose Bowl Stakes was lost due to the weather.
Two Listed 7f races were upgraded to Group 3 Level = Acomb Stakes at York & the fillies' only Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket.
(c) Increase in Nursery Events in 2009. 2 x Selling Nurseries in that season.

Note that the 'Auction' category only covers races where raceweights vary with runners' auction prices. 'Median Auctions' races with normal weight-for-sex raceweights are categorised as 'Maidens'. See the Glossary on this site for an explanation of the difference between 'Maiden' and 'Median' Auction races.

For an explanation of the difference between Group, Classic, Pattern, Listed & 'Black Type' races see the Article on the site covering the 2006 Group Race schedule.

3. What was the breakdown by Class of race?

Season A B C D E F G H
2002 55 31 71 430 225 89 41 None
2003 58 31 57 455 244 108 43 None
2004 59 23 56 460 247 100 38 15
Note: (a) New Race Classification introduced July 1st 2004, including 'H' category

A new race classification was introduced on July 1st 2004 and the remainder of the 2yo races in that season were assigned to their expected Classes under the previous system.

Season 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
2005 62 36 40 200 504 141 15
2006 63 42 41 250 432 124 7
2007 61 44 58 268 410 189 0
2008 58 47 48 322 416 157 0
2009 62 49 48 328 454 143 0
Note: Increase in Class 4 over Class 5 in 2006 = racecourses allocating more prize money, mainly to maidens, to lift them into class 4.

At the start of the 2005 turf season a new system was started which split the races into 7 categories based on rating range and race prize money. Only the relatively small number of Nurseries could be split by rating range for 2yos so the majority of races are split by their prize money level, but with two exceptions :-

  • All Group and Listed races (i.e. the races often referred to as 'black type' level) are in Class 1 regardless of monetary value.
  • All 'Regional Racing' (now 'Banded') events (i.e. the 0-45 rated lowest level) are in Class 7 and prize money is limited to a low level. (Less than the levels that people were deriding as too low 25 years ago....)
  • Race Types can appear in any Race Class depending upon their prize money. For example, there were maiden races in all classes from 2 to 6 and a number of the Class 7 Regional races were also maidens. Conditions races range from Class 2 to 5 but with the bulk of them in Classes 2-3.

Penalties for previous winners in Novice and Conditions races often take into account the Class of the previous win(s). The majority of 2yos do not win and those that do win only one race. The range of prize money value for maiden races is not wide and a win will not cover training fees in nearly all cases. Therefore the lower Class races can be quite strong because 'a win is a win' and the thrill of a winner is what most owners hope for at best. A win in a lower Class maiden then has the added advantage of attracting a low, or no, penalty in later races and probably a lower Official Rating (for Nurseries) regardless of the actual quality of the winning performance.

    5. How many races are run during each month of the season?

    2009 4 37 106 124 180 202 209 201 21 1,084
Note: (a) Unusual number of abandoned meetings in July 2007 causing low race number
    (b) Season started 10 days later in 2007 and went on later into November
    (c) Large increase in races Oct-Nov in 2007, partly because of divided races and increase in AW meetings.

    6. How has the number of races on All-Weather surfaces changed?

Great Leighs Kempton Lingfield Southwell Wolverhampton Total AW % of All
    2yo Races
    2003 - 29 25 29 83 8.3%
    2004 - 43 22 23 88 8.8%
    2005 - 46 14 37 97 9.7%
    2006 36 56 10 51 153 15.9%
    2007 61 62 6 73 202 19.6%
    2008 39 64 47 17 41 208 19.8%
    2009 0 72 45 26 61 204 18.8%
Note: (a) Kempton redeveloped in 2005 to open as a floodlight Polytrack course in 2006
    (b) Southwell closed by flooding from later July 2007, meetings mostly transferred to other AW courses.
Course open for start of 2008 2yo season.
    (c) Great Leighs opened on April 30th, 2008 following an 18 month delay during
which time their allocated meetings have mostly been transferred to other courses including those with turf tracks.
[Great Leighs company went into Administration before the start of the 2009 season & allocated 2009 meetings transferred to
a mix of other AW & Turf courses.]

Remember that the table above covers 2yo races during the Turf Season from late March to early November. The totals do not include any of the 'Winter AW' meetings which has also seen a notable expansion in recent seasons. The increase in the percentage of 2yo races run on artificial surfaces in 2006-7 is quite startling.
